If you are asking this question, most likely, you have already encountered the main problem: there are many offers, but understanding who actually makes machines and who just sells pictures is already half the battle. Many people immediately go to Alibaba and think that the issue is resolved, but with equipment of this level everything is not so simple.
The vertical ring rolling mill is not a universal equipment that is produced in hundreds. It is often designed or seriously modified for a specific task: ring sizes, material, accuracy. Therefore, the first step is to clearly define the terms of reference. Without this, conversations with factories will turn into a list of abstract prices and empty promises. I've seen people lose months because they initially couldn't figure out whether they needed large diameter hot rolling or precision cold rolling for bearing rings. These are fundamentally different worlds and different manufacturers.
When you have technical specifications, do not rush to send requests to everyone. The Chinese market here is divided into several layers. There are large state or former state giants that make excellent, but very expensive and inflexible complexes. There is a layer of strong private factories, which, in my opinion, constitute the “golden mean?” - they are technologically advanced, ready for adaptation, but they still need to be filtered from just assembly workshops. And there is a third echelon - companies that buy the main components (bed, electric drives, CNC) and assemble the machine at home. This is not always bad, but the risks in terms of build quality and, most importantly, after-sales service are higher.
Personally, I started with industry exhibitions, for example, ?Metal China? in Shanghai. This is an invaluable experience: you can see the equipment live, touch it, and communicate with engineers, and not just sales managers. Remember a couple of names, then Google them. But the exhibition is only an entry point. Then the real work begins.
This is perhaps the most critical skill. A trading company can have a gorgeous website and speak perfect English or Russian. The manufacturer often has a more “technical”, sometimes even awkward website. Key points: look for the sections ?Plant News? with photos of workshops, ?Production process?, ?Quality control?. If the site only has beautiful 3D renderings of machines and no live photos from production, this is a red flag. Another sign is the willingness to quickly provide contacts of the chief engineer or technical department to discuss details, and not just the commercial director.
Be sure to request a list of completed projects (reference list) with customer contacts. A real manufacturer who has nothing to be ashamed of will give you 2-3 contacts from your region or with similar tasks. I once got into trouble by believing a beautiful catalog, and then found out that the ?factory? - these are three workshops in the suburbs, where machines are assembled from purchased components, and there is not a single design engineer there. The post-purchase service was, accordingly, a nightmare.

But when in correspondence they immediately sent a drawing of the general layout with our dimensions and began asking questions about the intricacies of the technology (workpiece temperature, required ovality accuracy), it became clear that the conversation was being conducted by engineers.
Not all provinces in China are the same for heavy engineering. Traditionally, strong clusters for forging and rolling equipment are located in Shandong, Henan, and also in the Wuxi region (Jiangsu). Their focus is different. Shandong, for example, is historically strong in metal forming equipment; there are many factories there with good foundry and forging facilities. This is important because the bedvertical ring rolling mill- a massive casting, and the quality of the metal is critical here.
When I was looking for a supplier for a titanium ring rolling project, I deliberately narrowed it down to Shandong and parts of Liaoning. Why? For irresponsible production, maybe it will do. But if you need stability and resource, look at what components the plant uses. Siemens, Bosch Rexroth, or local analogues? This immediately divides the market into segments.
Let's say you found 2-3 promising factories. What's next? Be sure to plan a visit. No amount of Zoom conferences can replace a walk around the workshop. Look at the cleanliness, organization of labor, the fleet of metal-cutting machines (are there heavy turning and milling centers for processing their own beds). Ask where they get the castings for key parts. If everything is done in-house, this is a huge plus for quality control.
The contract must strictly specify the stages of acceptance. Standard practice is FAT (Factory Acceptance Test). You arrive (or send your engineer) to the plant, the machine is assembled and started up at idle speed, and ideally, a test piece is rolled. All parameters (accuracy, noise, vibration, temperature of components) are recorded in the protocol. Only after signing this protocol is payment of the remaining amount and shipment. Do not agree to schemes where you have to pay 100% before shipment.
Training and commissioning are a separate story. Often the base price only includes training for your technicians at the manufacturer. But the cost of sending Chinese engineers to you for installation and launch is a separate article. It is better to discuss it and fix it in advance so that there are no surprises. And check for how long the warranty is provided and what is included in it. Mechanical warranty is one thing, control system warranty is another.
The story begins after the machine has been shipped and started up. How quickly can you receive spare parts? It is ideal if the manufacturer has a warehouse of consumables (bearings, seals, sensors) in your region or, at worst, in Europe. Another point that little is thought about at the start: the possibility of modernization. Technologies change and new requirements may appear. Was it discussed during the design that in a couple of years it would be possible to replace the CNC unit with a more modern one or install a laser diameter measurement system? A good manufacturer builds in this opportunity because they are looking at long-term relationships. If they tell you “no, the machine is the way it is, nothing can be changed,” this also says a lot.

You need to spend time on analysis, on personal meetings, on checking your reputation. To save time at this stage means with a high probability of getting headaches for years to come. And yes, sometimes it’s worth paying 10-15% more, but to get access to the design department of the plant and a clear understanding of who and how will solve any problems in the future. This is the price that ultimately turns out to be the lowest.
